JSON Escape / Unescape

Embed arbitrary text inside a JSON string without breaking it. Escape mode produces a valid JSON string literal with quotes, backslashes, and control characters escaped. Unescape mode takes a JSON string literal (or bare escaped content) and returns the original text.

Frequently asked questions

Which characters get escaped?

Double quotes, backslashes, and control characters such as newlines and tabs. Other characters, including Unicode, are left as they are.

Does unescape accept a bare string?

Yes. If the input is not wrapped in quotes it is treated as escaped content and decoded as if it were inside a string.
